Autism
Sleep problems are more common in persons with intellectual disabilities or behavioural disorders  than among the general population. Individuals with behavioural disorders and sleep problems exhibit more daytime behavioral problems, irritability, and lethargy. Sleep problems not only negatively affect the individual but also the family and other caregivers. Disruptions in the circadian sleep-wake cycle are often prevalent. As a consequence, it may be challenging to teach the person to develop and maintain an adequate sleep-wake rhythm. Treating sleep problems in individuals is usually difficult.
Behavioral methods can be effective, and sedatives, which may cause serious side effects, are often prescribed. Due to complex medication regimens, the risk of drug interactions is increased, which can complicate the situation further.

People with autism often suffer from severe sleep problems, with a prevalence ranging from 40 percent to 80 percent, depending on the study. Autism is characterized by qualitative changes in reciprocal social interactions and modes of communication, as well as by a restricted inventory of interests and activities that are stereotyped and repetitive. These characteristics affect functioning in any situation and are often accompanied by behavioral problems such as impulsiveness, outbursts of anger, hyperactivity, and poor concentration. Autism is diagnosed in the first years of life and is frequently associated with mental retardation. Several studies emphasize the fact that sleep disturbances contribute to daytime behavioral problems, making it even more important to treat these sleep disturbances effectively. Currently, chronic sleep disorders in children with pervasive development disorder (PDD) appear to be associated with a disturbance in melatonin secretion.

Our compounding pharmacists offer advise to help understand your treatment options.

We can formulate:

  • Suitable designed Dose Forms – the dose form of the medication used can be tailored to suite the infant or child’s requirements. We can prepare specially flavored mixtures, suspensions, troches/lozenges, popsicles, gummy gels, chewing gums, suckers/lollipops, puddings/jellos, and even forms for topical administration.
  • Tailored Dosages – the strength of each dose can be tailor made for the infant in order to minimise any side effects.
  • Palatable Flavours – a wide variety of palatable flavours such as chocolate, raspberry, vanilla and bubblegum are available to mask the taste of the medication. This helps improve compliance and makes the parents job a little easier.

We are happy to work with your doctor or specialist to formulate a medicine that is tailored to the health needs of your child.
