What is it?
Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory skin condition characterised by an eruption of skin lesions known as “pimples” which typically cluster around the face, chest, back, and neck.
For most people, it is normal to experience some mild acne, especially during puberty and adolescene when sebum (oil) is temporarily overproduced. However, some individuals are affected by moderate to severe forms of acne which can be concerning due to the risk of scarring and infection, as well as cosmetic dissatisfaction, low-self esteem, or depression.

Treatment Options:
Some lifestyle factors that may contribute to acne include heightened periods of stress, a poor diet rich in ultraprocessed foods, or poor hygiene practices. Oftentimes mild acne can be treated by simply addressing these environmental factors with some over-the-counter skin care products. Simply call up or enter the pharmacy, and our trained pharmacists will provide tailored advice to help treat mild acne.
Other times, acne may be aggrvated by bacterial or fungal infections, or is at greater risk of scarring, in which cases, pharmaclogical intervention is necessary in combination with healthy lifestyle behaviours.
Ingredients commonly prescribed in acne preparations are listed below.
Azelaic Acid
Azelaic acid is commonly used to treat mild acne and rosacea as it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and exfoliating action. It can be used in compounded preparations at higher dosages to kill acne-causing bacteria and reduce the appearance of scars.
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid has antibacterial properties, and acts as a keratolytic, meaning it can break down the outermost layer of dead skin cells to remove pore blockage and brighten the appearance of scars.
Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid gently exfoliates the skin by dissolving sebum (oil) that is blocking pores. It also acts as a keratolytic, menaing it can break down the outermost layer of dead skin cells to remove pore blockage and brighten the appearance of scars. It also stimulates collagen production which improves elasticity and skin texture.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a strong anti-inflammatory ingredient. It also reduces sebum (oil) production. Niacinamide is typically used to treat mild to moderate acne.
What is it?
Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes itchiness, dryness, redness, and irritaiton. It tends to appear around the joints such as inside elbows and behind knees, as well as in between fingers and toes.
Eczema is typically a hereditary condition and is often associated with other atopic conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis (hayfever), and other common allergies.

Treatment Options:
Mild eczema can easily be managed with over-the-counter products as well as gentle skin care practices upon pharmacist advice. It is important to wash with fragrance-free non-irritant soap and moisturise eczema-prone areas before, during, and after flare ups. If you are using a pharmacolgical product to manage a flare up, apply it 15 minutes before or 15 minutes after a moisturiser to ensure both are absorbed adequately.

Management tip #3
Moisturise eczema-prone areas well during and after flares to reduce irritation and promote healing.
Pharmacological and non-pharmacological products for eczema management will typically come in various forms inculding creams, ointments, lotions, and gels.
Cream: Creams are typically preferred during the day, especially for school children, to avoid an “greasy” look or feel.
Ointment: Ointments are more occlusive and less likely to smear and are thus preferred for extremely dry or cracked skin.
Occasionally lotions or gels are recommended by our specialist pharmacists for specific conditions. This is why we prioritise tailoring your medication to your skin with personalised compounding.
