Our Hair Loss Solutions
What We Offer

Our chief compounding specialist has specially formulated a unique hair loss solution that is designed to prevent hair loss and promote hair regrowth.

Different formulations with varying quantities and the inclusion or exclusion of certain ingredients can be specially compounded in our laboratory.

We vary our formulation depending on the intended use for each patient. We regularly compound solutions for:

  • Male pattern hair loss (Androgenic Alopecia)
  • Female pattern hair loss (Androgenic Alopecia)
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Beard hair growth
  • Eyebrow hair growth
  • Other forms of Alopecia (hair loss)
How To Order

Hair loss solutions include ingredients that require a prescription from a medical practitioner, therefore all hair loss solutions require a prescription before we can begin compounding. This is to ensure your personal safety and to provide optimal treatment tailored to your specific hair condition.

The Science Behind Hair Loss
What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss, medically known as alopecia, can occur for a range of environmental or medical reasons, some of which are listed below:

Genetics

Androgenic Alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss, often referred to as male or female pattern baldness. It is hereditary, meaning it is inherited from family members, and it can be influenced by hormones such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and thyroid imbalances can disrupt hair growth cycles. Women with conditions like polycycstic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may also experience hair thinning due to hormonal imbalances.

Stress

Telogen Effluvium is a condition where significant stress pushes hair follicles into a resting phase, leading to shedding. Emotional and physical stress can both be triggers for hair loss.

Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions can lead to hair thinning and hair loss as a symptom or side effect. For example:

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles,

Scalp infections such as ringworm can cause temporary hair loss, or

Chronic illnesses such as lupus, diabetes, and other systemic conditions.

Medications and Treatments

Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, as well as certain medications such as those for arthritis, or depression, can cause hair loss as a side effect.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist to investigate hair loss  that is suspected to be caused by a medication.

Hairstyling and Hair care

Repeated tight hairstyles, such as ponytails and braids, can lead to traction alopecia. Overuse of harsh chemicals or heat styling tools can also damage hair and cause hair loss.

Is Hair Loss Normal?

Yes, it is normal to experience some hair loss as we age. Men are typically more prone to experiencing hair loss than women.

However, losing large amounts of hair can sometimes be a sign of an underlying issue such as stress, hormonal imbalance, medical conditions, or poor hair care practictes. It is good practice to investigate hair loss with the help of a medical practitioner.

50% of adult males experience noticeable hair loss by the age of 50
70-80% of individuals experiencing hair loss report decreased self-esteem
85% of adult males experience male pattern baldness by the age of 70
40% of adult females experience female pattern baldness by the age of 70
The Hair Growth Cycle

The natural cycle of hair involves 3 phases of growth, rest, and shedding to continually produce new healthy hair follicles all over your body. Hair loss occurs when environmental or medical factors cause disturbances to this cycle, causing either reduced hair growth or increased shedding.

Anagen Phase (Growth)

Hair follicles are actively producing new hair cells during this phase.

Catagen Phase (Transition)

Hair growth stops during this phase and the hair follicle shrinks. The hair detaches from the blood supply but remains anchored in the follicle.

Telogen Phase (Shedding)

No new hair growth occurs during this phase and the hair follicle remains dormant. Eventually the shrunken hair inside falls out to make way for new hair growth in the next phase.

Return to Anagen Phase

The now empty hair follicle regenerates new hair cells and go through the hair growth cycle once again.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone derived from testosterone that plays a key role in causing hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness). There are a few ways in which DHT causes hair thinning and loss, some are listed below:

  1. DHT binds to hair follicles causing ‘minituarisation’ whereby the hair follicle shrinks over time and produces thinner, weaker hairs.
  2. DHT reduces the length of the anagen phase causing shorter, weaker hairs to grow.
  3. DHT reduces blood flow to the scalp which limits the delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles, further weakening them.

Since DHT is an important disruptive factor to the hair growth cycle, it is a great target for hair loss treatments.

Treatment Goals

In order to treat and prevent hair loss, our medicated treatments are designed to target the processes that disrupt the hair cycle through a number of means.

Our hair loss treatments are designed to:

  • Block the conversion of testosterone to DHT to reduce the disruptive effects of DHT on the hair growth cycle.
  • Increase blood flow, collagen production, and nutrient delivery to the scalp.
  • Promote cell division to stimulate the regrowth of new hair follicles.
  • Extend the growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle, resulting in longer, thicker hairs.
  • Delay the resting (telogen) phase of the hair growth cycle to reduce hair shedding.
  • Protect the hair follicles from oxidative stress.
  • Include penetration enhancers to ensure active ingredients effectively cross the skin barrier to reach local target receptors.

How long until i see results?

Results vary between individuals depending on individual formulations, adherence to medication,a nd personal lifestyle factors such as stress and hormonest. However, generally, patients can expect to see results after approximately 4-6 months of consistent application. Consistency is paramount.

How can i tell if it is working?

To the naked eye, progress may be visible to track in short periods of time. Hair loss treatments typically produce gradual improvement, as such, it is important to compare results after months of consistent treatment as opposed to weeks or days. The best way to do so is to take a photo of the area being treated in the same lighting and at the same angle at monthly intervals to observe progress over 6-12 month periods. If results remain unsatisfactory, contact your prescriber to discuss your goals and expectations.

How do i apply a topical solution?

It is important that you follow the individualised instructions provided to you by your doctor and pharamcist as application procedures may vary slightly between individuals.

The basic steps for applying topical lotions are roughly as follows:

1. Ensure the skin where you plan to apply product is clean and completely dry.

2. For some products, you must shake the bottle well before use. See your indivdual product information to confirm.

3. Apply the specified amount directly onto the skin and gently massage into the skin with your fingertips for 10-15 seconds. This stimulates blood flow which increases the local absorption of topical solutions.

4. Wash your hands thoroughly after application to prevent skin-to-skin transfer of the product from your hands to other individuals as this product may not be appropriate for others.

Our compounding specialists are dedicated to collaborating with you and your prescriber to compound tailored products to suit your personal needs. Compounding is about finding alternatives where limitations would otherwise exist.
