Iron Deficiency
What is it?

Iron is an essential mineral obtained from the diet that has many important roles in the body. For example, iron is responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body through the blood. It is also used in the production of some hormones, and provides the body with energy and protection against infection.

Common symptoms of iron deficiency include excessive fatigue, dizziness, and a fast heart rate.

Common Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Light-headedness
  • Fast heart rate
  • Heart palpatations

Iron deficiency commonly affects children, adolescents, women of child bearing age, pregnant women, vegetarians, vegans, and older adults.

Your GP will typically test for iron deficiency at regular check ups; however, if you want to check at another time, simply see your doctor for a blood test.

Treatment Options:

Our specialist pharmacists can advise patients about appropriate treatments for iron supplementation when dietary intake is insufficient.

Pain
What are the different types?

Pain is a subjective feeling and can originate from various different causes. Pain is often caused by injury to bone or muscle, when this is the case it is called nociceptive pain. Other times, pain can orignate from nerve pressure or damage, in which case it is called neuropathic pain. At Ramadan Pharmacy we are capable of compounding specialised prescription and non-prescription formulations to treat both types of pain after a diagnosis has been reached.

Nociceptive pain

Nociceptive pain is caused by damage to body tissue for example external injury, muscle tears, or bone breakage. Nociceptive pain tends to feel sharp, aching, or throbbing.

Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is related to nerve pain that stems from nerve damage or malfunction. Nerve pain can feel like burning, tingling, or numbness. Nerve pain is typically less obvious and requires investigation from a specialist medical practitioner before treatment.

Treatment Options:

Treatment for nociceptive and neuropathic pain typically requires investigation from a medical practitioner and a valid prescription.

There are many other techniques to manage pain at home in addition to pharmacological treatment.

Physiotherapy

For nociceptive pain that arises from a sports injury, physiotherapy is typically advised to improve strength and promote muscle healing.

Heat/ Cold Packs

Heat packs and cold packs can be used to soothe nociceptive pain although there is often confusion about when to use which.

For muscle pain arising from sorness and tightness, heat packs can be used to increase blood flow to the area and reduce pain.

In instances where pain arises from inflammation, such as after a sports injury, cold packs are better to constrict blood flow and reduce inflammation.

Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness may also help with the psychological sensation of pain with techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, and meditation.

H. Pylori Infection
What is it?

Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) is a type of bacteria that can infect the stomach and disrupt the healthy bacteria that normally occupy the gut. This disruption may cause undesirable symptoms such as stomach ulcers, gastritis, and the sensation of heart burn.

If you are exhibiting signs of H. Pylori infection, or are having stomach issues with an unknown cause, consult your doctor. A doctor my prescribe an H. Pylori test to investigate whether an infection is present.

Treatment Options:

At Ramadan Pharmacy, we are practiced at compounding specialised H. Pylori eradication formulations.

Treatment for H. Pylori infection requires a prescription from a medical practitioner so that treatment may be individualised to your health needs.

We also recommend use of a probiotic to support the regrowth of normal healthy bacteria in your gut during and after therapy. Our team will advise patients on the best probiotic to take with their appointed treatment.

Our compounding specialists are dedicated to collaborating with you and your prescriber to compound tailored products to suit your personal needs. Compounding is about finding alternatives where limitations would otherwise exist.
